How to Plan a Zero Waste Picnic

It’s no secret that we love a good picnic - it’s a great way to get outdoors, enjoy delicious food, and spend quality time with friends and family. However, picnics often involve a lot of single use plastics. Whether it’s disposable cutlery, dip containers, plastic plates or cracker packets. We’ve teamed up with our friends at Seed & Sprout (our favourite sustainable brand) to show you how to plan a zero waste picnic…

1. Take time to prepare and use your reusables

Instead of picking food and drink up on your way to a picnic, take some time to prepare food and drinks ahead of time as a simple way to reduce single use plastics. Chop up your fruit and veggies, and add them to a reusable container. You can also take water with you in a reusable drink bottle instead of buying plastic bottles.

2. Make your own food

We know what you’re thinking, “who has time for that?” but it’s so worth it and usually quicker than you think! Buying dips that don’t come in a plastic tub is next to impossible, so try your hand at making one instead. Most of us have a stale loaf of bread hanging around too, so why not make some crackers to go with it? This is a great way to reduce food waste in your kitchen and to use up any food that you may have otherwise thrown out.

3. Pack your own utensils

Ditch plastic plates and cutlery and pack your own from home instead. Simply wrap them in a tea towel to transport (a tea towel will come in handy on your picnic too!) and take them home with you afterwards.
