The Making of our Picnic Basket

Each and every TBP design is dreamt up at our studio in the Northern Rivers of Australia. Our Founders, Emma and Victoria work together with our Head Designer, Jake to bring their visions to life. It all starts with a simple idea for a practical, innovative and long-lasting product that will stand the test of time. Our best-selling Picnic Basket is no exception. We chat to our Founders about what inspired the design and just how long it took to perfect this best-selling product…

What made you want to design your own Picnic Basket?

Picnics are a really nostalgic thing for us, they remind us of childhood. Our mum always had a picnic basket, but we remember it being very heavy and unpractical. As we both have families, we’re always adventuring outdoors, and taking fresh snacks is a must. We found that we were taking a picnic basket to the beach, along with a dorky cooler bag from the grocery store for our chilled goods like cheese and wine. So we thought - why not combine the two?

From a wooden cheeseboard lid, to a fully insulated basket, it’s got so many unique design features. What inspired the design?

We’d experienced one too many failed picnics where our food was ruined by the sun and sand. We wanted to create a picnic basket that was both stylish and functional. Insulation was a must-have, and then once we were dreaming up really unique and innovative features, we decided to add a food-grade cheeseboard lid so you don’t need to take a separate cutting board with you.

Can you tell us about the design process? How long did it take to create?

It took about two years to design, sample, test and create. We went back and forth on the shape, colour and materials to make sure it was not only durable, but beautiful as well. There are so many picnic baskets out there, but many of them are dark, clunky and not user-friendly. We established quite early on that we wanted ours to be round as a point of difference, and that’s one of the things that we love about it most.

Tell us your favourite way to use your Picnic Basket…

There are so many! It’s a staple in both of our homes. We use it at the markets every Friday morning to keep our chilled goods like seafood, meat and dairy cool, for family beach days, and it’s great to take to dinner parties.
