What made you decide to visit Costa Rica?
My first trip to Costa Rica was in 2008, with a return visit in 2009. We had attempted to return multiple times, but the timing never aligned. I am so happy it finally did and we made our way back to this beautiful place. The main reason we go is because some of our best friends take an annual trip there and it was high time for us to finally join them + bring our children to experience the magic that is Santa Teresa. The surf, the food, the people and the surrounding natural beauty is more than I can ask for. Plus any excuse to escape the brutal winter of New Jersey for some hot sun on our faces.
What research and planning did you do beforehand?
Our friends greatly helped us in choosing the perfect location so we had a pretty great in as far as where to stay and what to do. They may as well be locals! We were lucky we had them to guide us prior to our visit.
Where did you stay and how did you choose this area?
We stayed in Santa Teresa which is a small town in the Nicoya Peninsula. A flight to San Jose and a puddle jumper to Tambor will lead you to the beautiful beaches there. The journey may feel long (especially with kids!) but it is worth it! The pacific coast is greatly known for its surf, yoga and nature. I love the laid back vibe, the dusty streets full of surfers, people of all walks of life and every language being spoken. But best of all, my kids had the time of their lives. My daughter surfed daily, I ate fresh fish + fruit and did yoga, and we spent time with good friends. It's heavenly. I can't wait to go back next year.
Best spots for a bite to eat?
The food was incredible! I walked to Eat Street every morning for a coconut milk latte, acai bowl and green juice. The streets were quiet at 7 am and it's not too hot so it really felt like a relaxing little ritual. The Bakery is also another must for breakfast. Their baked goods and breakfast burritos are to die for.
There was also a strong Argentinean presence there, so naturally I had to try El Facon. Their empanadas + choripan were delicious. Rocamar for on the beach casual dining- their verde bowl with fresh fish + fish tacos were killer! The beach swing was a huge hit with my kids. I must have eaten a tuna poke bowl for lunch everyday from Nami. Florblanca had incredible ceviche but their spa is definitely worth treating yourself to. For a livelier vibe, head to restaurant Play Carmen for beachfront dining with a great menu. You really can't go wrong in most places.
Where did you get your caffeine fix?
Eat Street Cafe, Ani's or El Patio. The coffee in Santa Teresa was so good! Homemade fresh coconut or almond milk was my go-to.
Best hidden gem…
For sunset, Vista De Olas is a special treat. The view is unmatched plus there is a swim up bar. There truly is no better way to watch the sunset. The tide pools were also spectacular. But I will keep that secret between me + the locals.
